What is a good fitness bar to eat after a workout?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

My workout routine usually consists of running 1.5 miles and doing different types of weight training. I wanting to lose 10-12 pounds that I have put on after entering college, but this has been a very hard task for me thus far. So…I’m looking for a good fitness bar to eat after I workout to help me with my weight loss process. Thanks for any advice.

Askmen.com recommends Cliff bars. There are multiple varieties, including high-protein (although what you need most for recovery are carbs to restore muscle glycogen).

Askmen.com also rates chocolate milk as the #1 recovery food, if taken soon after the conclusion of the workout.

As for me, I stick to a homemade shake with water and soy milk, protein powder, fruit, raw cocoa, brewer’s yeast, and flax meal.

What affordable health insurance is the best for me?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I will be divorced in 2 months and will have to find my own health insurance. I have been with Anthem for 14 years and have no health problems and no medications except 1 blood pressure pill a day. I am waiting for a quote from Anthem for a single policy but I am afraid it will not be affordable. Thanks for all the help I can get!

Try this site where you can compare quotes from different companies in your area

Is there a supplement that can replace the 5-10 daily servings of fruits and vegetables?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I have seriously a hard time meeting that healthy requirement.

Some kind of natural product supplement on the market, like a powder that you can mix with to a glass of water, that tastes good, affordable, you could either drink of eat it and boom! 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetable taken in one easier go.

Anyone?

You can buy a type of vitamin that has fruit and vegetable extracts. I don’t recall the name of it but go browse the vitamin sections at a place like Hi-Health or whatever vitamin shop is in your area. Check the labels, it’ll show things like spinach, watercress and what not. You do have to take it three times a day; the reason being your body does not absorb 100% in one dose, so taking a pill with the full requirements (including regular vitamins) is actually a waste. I believe you can only absorb roughly 33% at a time. Last time I took it, it was about $25 for a month supply. You can’t expect miracles ;) But, my friend recovering from bulimia and cancer use to take it religiously and was in way better health.

Personally, I just try to consume more produce. It can be difficult. Some ideas are, make a small salad with dinner. You don’t need to dig out the salad bowl; just toss some lettuce mix on your plate and dab on a little dressing. I also find that I’m not really a salad fan, but just slices of my favorite vegetables with dinner. So I might just cut a half of bellpepper into strips to add on my plate, or add a small handful of cherry tomatoes. If I make pasta, I always add a vegetable at the end. Most rice dishes can stand at least one vegetable. Don’t limit yourself. Have fruit with dinner instead. I love an orange with say, chicken and rice. Husband and I make "east asian" style salad too which is just cucumber, onion, tomatos cut in very small pieces and tossed together. We make a container of it that lasts either 2 or 3 days since it’ll go bad after that point. It’s way tastier than a pile of iceberg and quartered tomatoes. No dressing needed.

Also, try to change how you think about fruits and vegetables. For example, add onion. That’s a vegetable and it’s good for you. So add onion to a dish and mark off one vegetable serving for the day. Having mexican food? Make a quick pico in a food chopper (tomato, onion, jalepeno). Complimentary, tasty, easy, cheap and. . .another serving. Or two, depending.

Servings are also far less than you probably think. You don’t need to eat the entire mango for a serving. In fact, a serving of mango is about two wedges (slices). By eating the entire mango, you’ve covered about 3 servings. Of course, you want to keep things varied. That adds nutrients and interest. The rule of thumb is a serving is 1/2 cup. It’s not really too much once you look at it.

Don’t buy things you don’t like. This sounds like commonsense, but if you just don’t like the big tomatoes, buy the smaller ones. There is a difference in flavor. Try new things too. Shop in season and on sale, so your selection changes over the year. Keep some strawberries frozen in the freezer and packets of smoothie mix on hand, especially during the summer.

If it’s still just not gonna happen, try the vitamins. You still want to get in some fresh produce, it’s just healthier that way, but those vitamins will help.

What are some ideas for where a college student majoring in nutrition might look for a job/volunteering?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I’m a freshman in college, majoring in nutrition. For my major you have to do a 5th year internship. To be chosen, it looks really good if you’ve worked and volunteered in things that relate somewhat to nutrition. I’m trying to think outside the box. I’ve been looking at the local hospital, my states food bank and nursing homes. Also job-wise there are restaurants and grocery stores maybe? But what are some other ideas where I could possibly work with any connection to food? I’d really appreciate any ideas! Thanks!

I am very busy but I can certaily take some cycling/yoga/pilates classes if this will help.
I’m not planning on looking perfect in one month… just better.
I am 5’2 and have no hips so its important to make my waist and abdonimal thinner and i hope to lose 5 pounds doing it.

I will pick a best answer…
Thank you!

Hey there! diet and nutrition are going to be quite huge for you, if you don’t have a ton of time for the gym/working out. Although, allowing adequate time for both would be super ideal.

I think the best way to shave off body-fat is intervals. You can learn about them here: http://www.swolefitness.com/fitness-articles/losing-weight/get-shredded-with-interval-cardio-training/

You could also check out jump roping. It’s also a super solid, and fun way to crank up the intensity, and lose weight. There’s an article about it here: http://www.swolefitness.com/fitness-articles/losing-weight/cardio-jump-roping-for-woman/

Anyways, with a little persistence, you’ll go so far! Just stay consistent and keep with it! Best of luck!

What happens to private health insurance companies if American health care is nationalized?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Few would be willing to dish out for private coverage while they are receiving health care from government taxation. Would the private health industry perhaps dwindle down to a few big players and be forced to take a hit by improving coverage and care?
I’m well aware health care won’t be nationalized. I meant to indicate this is a hypothetical question.

~~This is a mute point because Nationalized insurance is not in the works. All the government is proposing is an alternative for people who can’t get employer based insurance to be able to buy directly from the same insurance that senators and congressmen get. Otherwise, business as usual for private insurance companies.~~

What is a supplement to help lose weight and gain muscle?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

I eat healthy and excersice 5 out of 7 days, is there any supplement to help enhance a workout to get more out of it ?

There are no guarantees when it comes to supplements. What works for some, won’t work for others.

I hit a rut for a few weeks and bought a jar of NO Xplode (fruit punch) and it definitely increased my focus and my pump. It works for some and not others but I highly recommend it. It definitely gave new life to my workouts.

I also like to take some type of creatine after a workout (along with a protein shake.) Currently I use Cellmass (I don’t want to sound like a walking BSN ad) but it’s given pretty good results and helped me recover faster.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I am doing a science project(making my own energy drink) and i need the nutrition facts for the drink. I can’t seem to find the nutrition facts for sugar though. Help?

Here you go:

http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/sweets/5592/2

All you have to do is change the serving size to 1 tsp, and multiply every number by 6 to get them in terms of 2 tbsp (since 2 tbsp = 6 tsps). Hope this helped!

How can I get my doctor to prescribe HGH for working out?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Is it very easy to have my doctor prescribe me HGH. I starting a workout program and I want a pick me up to get me through my workouts.

it will be difficult if not impossible

if you just started working out, be patient!

also, if your muscles grow too fast, your will blow out your joints b/c your tendons and ligaments won’t get as strong as fast … do some research into strength training if you goal is to bulk up …

if you just need a "pick me up" then you are either not eating enough or you have low endurance – if it is endurance, then you will have to be patient and gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts as you build it … if it is diet, keep a food diary and see where you can add carbs a couple hours before a workout – also be sure to eat a little protein immediately following a workout – this stops the break-down of muscles and jump starts the rebuilding process – also try L-glutamine …
